HOW TO INSTALL DOOR HINGES. Step 1: Decide where you'd like to install the hinges. You can install hinges to make a door open to the left or the right. Step2: Mark the spots at which you want to install the hinges on the door frame. Most hinges are installed 10 inches from the door frame's bottom and 5 inches from the top. Step 3: Measure the same distance on the door itself and make corresponding marks. Step 4: Trace the outline of the hinge onto the door frame using a pencil. Make clear delineations of the width and height of the hinge. Step 5: Make marks for places in which you plan to place screws. Step 6: Create a depression in which to insert a recessed hinge on the door frame. Use a hammer and chisel to score the area within the outline of the hinge. Step 7: Screw the hinge in place. Avoid over-screwing the hinge. Step 8: Repeat Steps 5 through 8 to attach the recessed hinge to your door. Step 9: Connect the two halves of the hinges by reinserting the hinge pin. This will secure the door to the door frame.
